CSU Channel Islands to hold unveiling of \'Bittersweet Harvest\' — Bracero Program exhibit on Sept. 8

\\r\\n

\\r\\n

\\r\\n

The official unveiling of \\"Bittersweet Harvest,\\" an exhibition on the Bracero Program 1942-1964, will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the John Spoor Broome Library at CSU Channel Islands. \\"We will share this celebration with former braceros and their families who have participated in the Bracero Project,\\" the university reported in a media release. \\"The event is free and open to the public. Reception of food, refreshments and music will follow.\\" For residents of Ventura County, the exhibit serves to illustrate the impact of the Bracero Program on the region. The program, begun in 1942 as a Mexican guest-worker program, brought Mexican men across the border to supplement the labor shortage created during World War II. Once in the United States, they were housed in labor camps. The largest of these camps was located in the city of Oxnard, the Buena Vista Labor Camp, which housed 5,000 men during the 1950s. Twenty percent of all braceros who came to Ventura County worked in the citrus, fruit and vegetable fields, the university reported. Amigos805 is one of the sponsors of the exhibit.

CLU reports applications up 66 percent over 2009 with classes beginning Sept. 1

\\r\\n

\\r\\n

\\r\\n

Applications for first-year students jumped by 66 percent over 2009, which made it harder to get into California Lutheran University this year, the institution reported in a media release. Because CLU admitted only 47 percent of applicants this year, down from 63 percent in 2009, this year\'s first-year students make up the brightest and most diverse first-year class in CLU\'s history, officials reported. The average grade point average and SAT scores in the first-year class are the highest ever at CLU, with 20 percent of the students ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. There will be 565 first-year students starting classes on Sept. 1, the largest ever at the university, with a larger percentage of Latino and Asian American students attending this year.
